Story: Time Enough at Last
Written By: Rod Serling
Series: The Twilight Zone (Original Series)
Season: 1
Henry Bemis is a bookworm, obsessed with reading while everyone around him is cruel about his passion. His boss at the bank is sick of him reading on the job, his wife is an absolute monstrous bitch about letting him read. She crosses out all the words in one book and rips the pages out of another. That lady sucks hard. Trying to get some reading in during his lunch break, Bemis heads down to the bank vault to get a few pages in. While he is in there, the bomb is dropped. When he emerges from the vault, he finds that the world has been destroyed and he is the lone survivor. At first he is devastated, but then realizes he can finally read books in peace. He gathers them all up for a good read and then...oh come on...you know what happens!
I mean, what can I say? This is an all time classic for a reason. It is one of the best and most memorable episodes of the show. Burgess Meredith is so wonderful in this episode. His bookish nature throughout the episode, up to that fantastic ending where his glasses break and he cries over how unfair it all is...I mean it might be my favorite performance in the whole of the Twilight Zone. And I mean...that image of him surrounded by a destroyed world and stacks of books...there is a reason this became a fan favorite.NEXT TIME: Freddy Kreuger...eat your heart out!
