Waking Up at Pearl Harbor

Story: The Time Element Written By: Rod Serling Series: Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse Season: N/A In the late 50s, Rod Serling was a growing star as a writer of teleplays. He had two big hits in these early days of the medium, "Patterns" and "Requiem for a Heavyweight" which both aired on the then common anthology dramas. While he had earned some success and was in becoming in demand, he was constantly fighting with the censors and sponsors, who would make him change lines that may conflict with the product, or try to tame subject matter of relevant social issues because it might tarnish a brand by associating with a hot button issue. So Serling became fed up with the fighting, and decided to create his own show, in which he could have creative control...and he decided to use the science fiction medium, because you could often hide your social messages behind some bit of fantasy. I've always loved the Twilight Zone. I first started watching it as a kid because my mom loved it. When the Sci-Fi Channel began airing an annual TZ Marathon every New Years, it became a staple at our house. Just keep the TV on and enter the Twilight Zone until about midnight when they'd flip over for the dumb ball drop, and then back to the Zone until people began to head home. Then you'd just watch some ore on New Years Day because the show had so many great episodes. When I was older and Netflix had the whole show in HD (the remasters CBS did are excellent by the way), I went through and watched the whole run of the original show, or at least just made sure I saw all the episodes I may have missed over the years. I also briefly watched the 2002 reboot hosted by Forrest Whitaker when it originally launched on UPN. I didn't stick with it though. Some the few episodes I have seen from the 80s reboot were actually not too bad...and I actually like the Spielberg ...

The Cat Girl

Story: Perchance to Dream Written By: Charles Beaumont Series: The Twilight Zone (Original Series) Season: 1 "Perchance to Dream" stars Richard Conte as a man who believes that when he goes to sleep he will die, as he is haunted by a Cat Girl from a carnival, who taunts and torments him, each dream continuing on from the last. But he also has a heart condition that requires sleep...so he is really trapped in a damned if he does damned if he doesn't situation. He arrives at a psychiatrist office to tell his tale. This is the first episode of the show to be written by someone other than Rod Serling, written by Charles Beaumont and based upon his own short story. I think it is a solid story, and the direction and Conte's performance elevate it into a good little episode. It's not one I've thought aboutvery often, but I did enjoy revisiting it here.
